Meet The FYE Staff

Tyler Garney, Coordinator of New Student Transition Programs

Tyler Garney, M.A., is the Coordinator of New Student Transition Programs at Texas A&M University-Texarkana. Tyler directs the Office of First- Year Experience in the Student Success department on campus. Tyler, a two time graduate of TAMU-T, has worked as a First- Year Experience Coach during his time as an undergraduate student and worked in the Academic Advising department after he graduated in 2016. After graduating with his M.A., Tyler made the transition to First- Year Experience to continue working with students as they transition to higher education. His professional interests include student transitions, academic support programs in higher education, and student success programs for undeserved student populations.

Tyler provides leadership to the First Year Experience program, coordinates the First Year Experience PEEP Program, and leads the First Year Experience Coaching team. Tyler is responsible for planning, implementing, and assessing FYE programming designed to enhance first-year students’ success.

Ta'Mar earned a Bachelors of Science in Sociology from Texas A&M University Texarkana and is completing her MA in Communication at Texas A&M University Texarkana.

Ta'Mar provides leadership for First Year Experience initiatives and coordinates all programs. She is responsible for planning, implementing, and assessing FYE programming designed to enhance first-year students’ success.

Alvaro "Jesus" Valdez

Years as an FYE Coach: This is my first year as an FYE Coach.
Why I wanted to be an FYE Coach: I wanted to be an FYE coach to be able to influence and make students' first year run as smoothly as possible while avoiding the stress.
Fun fact: I love trucks- old and new. 

Brooklyn Bailey

Years as an FYE Coach: This is my first year as an FYE Coach.
Why I wanted to be an FYE coach: I love to help people find their passions and seeing them grow. 
Fun fact: I spend most of my time at car shows.

Catherine Coreas

Years as an FYE Coach: This is my first year as an FYE Coach.
Why I wanted to be an FYE coach: I wanted to be a FYE Coach because as a freshman I eagerly wanted to connect with people, learn as much as I could, and about myself. I want to help build anyone up to be the best they can be and make the best of this experience! As a Coach, I hope to be that person for someone. 
Fun fact: I cut my hair - pixie cut after watching Brad Mondo America’s Next Top Model reaction videos on YouTube and I decided to do what he says best "live your extra best life."

Chandler Moree

Years as an FYE Coach: This is my third year as an FYE Coach.
Why I wanted to be an FYE coach: I wanted to help first-Year students get the same kind of support that I received, and to help them avoid the pit falls I’ve seen throughout my years at TAMUT.
Fun fact: I’ve worked at a place that builds missiles.

Darrylynn Dean
Fall 2020 IS 1100 Professor: Ms. Katheryn Hartshorn
Years as Coach: This is my second year as an FYE Coach. 
Why I wanted to be an FYE Coach: I want to share my experience and prevent first- year students from making the same mistakes I did. I love helping people and I have an enthusiastic personality.
Fun Fact: I love to freestyle.

Janae Jones
Fall 2020 IS 1100 Professor: Dr. Angie Sikorski
Years as an FYE Coach: This is my first year as an FYE Coach. 
Why I wanted to be an FYE Coach: I love the idea of being there for those who need it. I remember my time as a freshman and how the coaches were always there when they were needed, even if it was for the simplest of things. Now, that person will be me.
Fun fact: I love to binge watch 90's cartoons and sitcoms.

Jessica Shelton
Fall 2020 IS 1100 Professor: Dr. Del Doughty
Years as an FYE Coach: This is my first year as an FYE Coach. 
Why I wanted to be an FYE Coach: I’m a social butterfly and I love to help others! Also, motivating others and ensuring them the best is uplifting for everyone!
Fun Fact: The entire left side of my body has been injured in some way! Example, I broke my left wrist, dislocated my left knee, and cut open my left foot!

Jovanna Dominguez
Fall 2020 IS 1100 Professor: Dr. Joe Burzynski
Years as FYE Coach: This is my first year as an FYE Coach. 
Why I wanted to be an FYE coach: I want to help first- year students successfully transition to their first year of college as well as being a resource for them in whatever they would need.
Fun fact: I have three dogs and a new baby niece.

Years as an FYE Coach: This is my first year as an FYE Coach. 
Why I wanted to be an FYE Coach: I want to impact the first- year students the same way I was impacted when I was a freshman. 
Fun Fact: I’m a twin.

Phillip Barnes

Years as an FYE Coach: This is my third year as an FYE Coach. 
Why I wanted to be an FYE coach: I know this position helps me shape future leaders. 
Fun fact: I’m a marathon runner. 

Ramon Hernandez
Fall 2020 IS 1100 Professor: Dr. Abbie Strunc
Years as an FYE Coach: This is my second year as an FYE Coach. 
Why I wanted to be an FYE coach: I want to be one to make a positive impact on first- year students' first experience on campus to help them have a smooth transition as well as leaving my mark on our campus.
Fun fact: I love food and working out. 

Samantha Gallegos
Fall 2020 IS 1100 Professor: Dr. Corrine Hinton and Doug Julien
Years as an FYE Coach: This is my second year as an FYE Coach. 
Why I wanted to be an FYE coach: I want to inspire and be inspired. When I think of becoming a writer or a professor and sharing with others, these experiences are first to come in mind. I aspire to share what I feel and learn, and working with others is definitely part of that.
Fun fact: I’m currently in the process of creating my own comic universe! It’s a lot of work, but super fun.

Years as an FYE Coach: This is my third year as an FYE Coach.
Why I wanted to be an FYE coach: I want to help first year students navigate through college.
Fun fact: I will be helping restore a historical cemetery this semester.

Shedriana "Ana" Degrate

Why I wanted to be an FYE coach: I love connecting with students and I want to be sure they have a great first year. 
Fun fact: I have a secret obsession with Vampires and Eminem.

Why I wanted to be an FYE coach: I love to help and assist the students. I have a passion for seeing others succeed.
Fun fact: I have an extensive bandana collection and I love music.

Years as an FYE Coach: This is my third year as an FYE Coach. 
Why I wanted to be an FYE coach: 
I want to make a positive impact on this school and help make the transition smooth and positively impact the students just like my FYE coaches did for me.
Fun fact: 
I can shoot a bullseye as if Robin Hood was my father.
