COVID-19 Testing Plan

Provision of Tests

The Texas A&M University System is providing Texas A&M-Texarkana (TAMUT) with 200 test kits each month, starting in July 2020. Unused test kits will be kept in storage up to 90 days.

Logistics

The vendor for the tests is Curative Labs, which is based in California. Tests may be administered and shipped for results seven days a week through a private courier.   

Access to Tests

Testing will be provided only to members of the Texas A&M University – Texarkana campus community (students, staff, and faculty). Other members of the broader community, including family members of campus community members, may not be tested and should seek medical assistance from a private healthcare provider.
Unless otherwise indicated by an academic requirement (i.e., Negative test required for a student to enter clinicals in Nursing or student teaching) or as required by the NAIA/Red River Conference for an athletic staff member or student-athlete to participate in practice or competition, tests will only be performed on

1. Individuals exhibiting symptoms for COVID-19 as described at cdc.gov

  • Fever/chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath/difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

2. Individuals who have been in close contact with a person presumed- or lab-confirmed positive with COVID-19.
 
NOTE: testing of an otherwise asymptomatic individual who is a close contact should be delayed after exposure to the positive individual for at least three days due to the time it takes for the virus to incubate and generate a  detectable viral load. Testing sooner may yield a false-negative test result. 

Testing Procedure

The tests are self-administered using a cotton swab that collects saliva from the inside of an individual’s mouth. Each exam takes approximately one minute, and the observer generally does not need to be within six feet of the individual performing the test.
Any individual receiving a test due to symptoms and/or contact will be advised to immediately self-isolate pending test results. Employees will be told to contact their supervisor and Human Resources for guidance. Students will be told to contact the Dean of Students for assistance in arranging course work accommodations and, if a resident of Bringle Lake Village, making arrangements to appropriately isolate. 

Results

Curative strives to release test results within approximately 30 hours. Curative will report any positive tests to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). Results are also available on the Curative web site to TAMUT Test Administrators. TAMUT Risk Management will review the Curative results page daily. Every tested individual will be contacted by TAMUT Risk Management or EHS to confirm that they know their results.
TAMUT’s Office of Risk Management and Compliance will notify the University’s Executive Group about any positive diagnoses. The Office of Risk Management will also notify relevant county authorities and Texas A&M System Contact Tracing Operations to ensure accurate and thorough contact tracing.
TAMUT’s Office of Risk Management will report the number of positive cases to Texas A&M System Risk Management each week.
