Beginning with the 2013-2014 award year:

The U.S. Department of Education added the Unusual Enrollment History Flag to the Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR). According to Dear Colleague Letter GEN-13-09, the purpose of the UEH Flag is to identify instances of potential fraud and abuse of the Federal Pell Grant Program. While some students have legitimate reasons for unusual enrollment histories, other students may enroll in postsecondary schools long enough to receive credit balance payments, leave the institutions, and repeat the process at other schools.

Due to new (effective for the 2012-13 academic year) federal regulations from the Department of Education:

-Food assistance received must be verified through documentation

-Child support paid must be verified through documentation

-1040 Tax Return forms will no longer be accepted. Students selected for verification must submit a Tax Return Transcript

-There is a no tolerance policy on amount discrepancies between a student’s FAFSA and the provided documentation. *Using the IRS Data Retrieval tool will help students avoid the corrections process*

-Graduate students are no longer eligible for subsidized Direct loans; however graduate students remain eligible for unsubsidized Direct loans

-Students are limited to twelve semesters (600%) of Pell Grant eligibility

-Effective July 2013, all undergraduate subsidized and unsubsidized Direct loans will have a fixed interest rate of 3.86%

-Recently, lawmakers agreed to permanently limit eligibility for subsidized loans to 150 percent of the length of the student’s academic program for new borrowers beginning on or after July 1, 2013. The 150 percent change means students in a four-year program will be eligible for subsidized student loans for the equivalent of six years – three years for students in a two-year program.
