Graduate Assistants

Texas A&M University-Texarkana offers several graduate assistantships to help graduate students finance their education and gain valuable experience.

To qualify for a graduate assistantship, students must meet the following general requirements. Additional requirements for specific appointments are listed below.

  • Hold the bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Be admitted to a degree-seeking program
  • New students—GPA of 3.0 or higher in last 60 semester credit hours
  • Current students—maintain a cumulative graduate GPA of 3.0

Students enrolled in 6 hours or more during long semesters or 3 hours or more during summer receive $500 tuition remission.

Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTA): GTAs serve as instructor of record for undergraduate courses if they meet the following requirements:

  1. GTAs must have a master’s degree in the teaching discipline or 18 graduate semesters hours in the teaching discipline.
  2. GTAs must have direct supervision by a faculty member experienced in the teaching discipline.
  3. GTAs must have regular in-service training.
  4. GTAs must have planned and periodic evaluations.
  5. Dean of Graduate Studies and Research will review and approve assignments of graduate students to teaching assistantships.
  6. Dean of Graduate Studies and Research will review student teaching evaluations each semester.

Graduate Assistants—Teaching Support (GA-TS): GA-TSs provide logistical assistance to the instructor of record. GA-TSs provide support such as grading tests, assisting in class discussion, or assisting in lab sub-sections led by faculty. GA-TSs are not responsible for teaching or evaluating students. They may not be listed as instructor of any class or course section.

  1. GA-TSs can work no more than 19 hrs per week.
  2. If the GA-TS needs access to Blackboard, the instructor of record can share access to the course as necessary; the GA-TS cannot be listed as instructor of record in Banner/Blackboard.
  3. GA-TSs must have planned and periodic evaluations.
  4. Dean of Graduate Studies and Research will review and approve assignments of graduate students to teaching support assistantships.
  5. Dean of Graduate Studies and Research will review evaluations each semester.

Graduate Research Assistants (GRA): GRAs provide research support to faculty members related to faculty-led research. GRAs may have additional requirements such as export control training or IRB training as required by the research project. GRAs do not have any teaching responsibilities and may not be listed as instructor of any class or course section.

  1. GRAs can work no more than 19 hrs per week
  2. GRAs must have planned and periodic evaluations.
  3. Dean of Graduate Studies and Research will review and approve assignments of graduate general educational support assistantships.
  4. Dean of Graduate Studies and Research will review evaluations each semester.

Graduate Assistants—General Educational Support (GA): GAs provide general educational support related to their field of study. GAs provide support to educational programs and offices on campus such as Registrar, Graduate Studies, Provost Office, East Texas Writing Program, IRB, etc. GAs do not have any teaching responsibilities and may not be listed as instructor of any class or course section.

  1. GAs can work no more than 19 hrs per week.
  2. GAs must have planned and periodic evaluations.
  3. Dean of Graduate Studies and Research will review and approve assignments of graduate general educational support assistantships.
  4. Dean of Graduate Studies and Research will review evaluations each semester.
